Not only are the Caribbean islands known for their lush, tropical climate providing an array of water sports for vacationers, but they are also at the corner of the US where a major hurricane belt covers much of the territory. This year more than 80,000 pairs of shoes are being donated to organizations in Haiti, the second largest island in the Antilles territory. Haiti, located on the same island as the Dominican Republic, has a mountainous, damp climate that has been devastated by years of hurricanes and a major 7.0 magnitude earthquake, in 2010. Haiti is the poorest and most undeveloped country in the Americas 80% of Haiti’s population lives on less than $2.00 per day and cannot afford to buy a pair of shoes because that money is needed for food and other survival needs.
